The Art of Packing Your Trunk

Are you headed over the river and through the woods to grandma's house this holiday season? Knowing where to start when packing for a road trip takes a lot of work. You've got clothes and toiletries to pack, plus snacks and other essentials. That's why it's crucial to think about how you will organize everything before throwing things into your trunk. I've found some tricks of the trade that help me get more stuff in my car when I travel!

Pack strategically in layers.

You can maximize space in your trunk by strategically packing in layers.

First, pack heavier items on the bottom and lighter ones on top (this will prevent your things from being crushed).

Second, use smaller plastic bags within your bags, so you don’t have to dig through your stuff to find anything. I’ll usually put an entire outfit in a plastic bag for kids, so I don’t have to shuffle around looking for matching items. You can do this with other things in the same category, such as makeup or face washing. This way, you won't be forced to take out all the clothes and other things just to get one item out.

Thirdly, try using small containers; they work exceptionally well for toiletries because they stack nicely and keep everything contained within a small space (you'll have less chance of spilling something).

Line the sides of your trunk with things you won't need to access during your trip.

Before you fill-up the trunk, line it with anything that won’t need to be accessed during the trip. This includes spare blankets and pillows, a cooler for food and drinks, and even tools like jumper cables or tire irons.

If there are any items that you do need in an emergency but want to keep out of sight (like a first aid kit), put them on top of your spare tire.

Finally, if there are still gaps between packed boxes after these steps have been completed, consider placing smaller items under seats or in door pockets where they won’t be seen.

Use extra space in your car for whatever you need during the trip.

Turkey Trot

A 5K race was held in the fall that benefits the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This year it takes place in Fort Lauderdale .

In this article, I'll discuss the benefits of preventative maintenance and give you three things to start with when you begin your dedicated maintenance plan.

Check your fluids.

The fluids in your vehicle are essential for your car's functioning! They need to be changed, flushed and checked at regular intervals. To begin preventative maintenance, I suggest constantly checking your oil, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid. These three things are easy to check and will give you a better picture of how far gone your vehicle is.

Oil change

Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates and protects engine parts, helps keep the engine cool, and filters out contaminants that could damage it over time. It helps control engine noise, too.

Transmission fluid

Transmission fluid is essential for the transmission, as it lubricates and cools the gears in your vehicle's transmission. It also helps to keep temperatures low, so your car will shift adequately and avoid overheating.

If you know us here at Premier Auto Service Center, you know that back-to-school season is a complicated and wonderful time. The shop is often busy with parents and students carrying fresh school supplies, breaking in their new gym shoes, and preparing themselves for the new school year. It’s also a great time to share one of our why we started building this business. Each year, Premier Auto Service Center gives to several local schools. We started giving to the local schools because we noticed that each teacher would have a list of items they needed for the school year during the open house. Halfway through the school year, there was always a new list. We decided to make sure we could help the teachers get supplies to help the students.

The Barbara Jamison Scholarship, which benefits Oasis High School senior students getting ready for their next chapter. We’ve been donating to this scholarship in honor of the terrific and talented teacher like Barbara Jamison.

Barbara was our youngest son's teacher, a significant one at that. She helped him think things out in a way that made him understand, taught him not to doubt himself, and provided essential lessons in being humble, dedicated, and there for others during difficult times. Barbara Jamison and her husband cared for “their children” (their students, who loved them dearly) even as Barbara underwent cancer treatments. Her motto was “Never Give Up,” and she didn’t, not on her students nor herself. She taught until she was told she had to stay home and passed shortly after. Then, shortly after she passed, our family got its first cancer diagnosis. Our son had the experience of seeing the treatments up close and encouraged all of us to “Never Give Up.”

While we can take a nice dip in the pool or enjoy a frozen treat to cool down, our cars often have to adjust to the rising temperature in less enjoyable ways. What To Watch Out For In The Heat

When it starts to get hotter and you’re heading out on more and more road trips, your vehicle is going to feel a little different. However, there are some big red flags you should be on the lookout for. These red flags could mean a more extensive repair is in order before an even more significant repair needs to take place. Paying attention to the following systems can help you prevent needing a huge repair before the Summer is over:

AC. You’ll be the first to know if your AC is having trouble in the summer heat! If you’ve turned your AC on at the start of your commute, and twenty minutes later, you’re still getting warm or lukewarm air, there’s probably a problem.
Radiator. Your radiator's primary purpose is to remove heat from the engine when it gets too warm. If your vehicle is getting hot, and that temperature gauge keeps going up and up, there might be a problem with your radiator.

The busy season is here, Cape Coral!

During their summer vacations, people flock to our state to see the beautiful sights and enjoy all there is to do here. Though we get to live here 365, it’s still nice to get out and enjoy what SW Florida has to offer. The awesome news is that you don’t need a week's vacation to enjoy Florida! There are dozens of places you can visit over the weekend or even just for a day. Here are a few of our faves:

Big Cypress National Preserve. The Big Cypress National Preserve has beautiful tropical sites and hiking trails for the nature lover. If you have a little extra time, you can even camp here. (Just 1 hour and 22 minutes from Cape Coral!)

Ave Maria . For the historical lover, go check out Ava Maria! The architecture is gorgeous, and you’ll find lots of fascinating history around the town. (A 1-hour drive from Cape Coral!)

Cayo Costa State Park. The Cayo Costa State Park is a gorgeous island that you can travel to by boat for the beach lover. Just park your car and hop on the ferry! (Just 55 minutes from Cape Coral!)

Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . For the adventure lover, check out the Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. You don’t have to get into the water to enjoy it, but it’s an exciting option. (A 3-hour drive from Cape Coral, and it sets you up right next to Key Largo and near Miami! Perfect for a weekend or overnight trip.)

Most people can expect (or hope) for their cars to last around 200,000 miles. However, you’ll find people on both sides of this spectrum: some have had cars die out with less than 50,000 miles, and others will tell you that their car lasted for triple that. But why? What’s the determining factor in car longevity? Is it luck by design or our responsibility as car owners?

There are definitely things we can do to ensure the longevity of our vehicles. Namely, we can:

Schedule preventive maintenance . Make sure to get your oil changed, tires rotated, and brakes checked frequently.
Replace parts when needed . Sometimes we don’t have the funds or the time to change a part that has a little life left on it. When we do this, we strain other parts of our vehicle. Try to get everything replaced promptly.
Keep up with the vehicle's maintenance schedule . Even if you treat your vehicle with care, all parts have a specific expiration date. Your vehicle maintenance schedule in your handbook will keep you on top of what parts need changing.
Take it easy when driving . Drive as much as you want, but steer clear of pot-holes or off-roading in vehicles that aren’t precisely… fit for that kind of adventure.
Fill our v ehicle with the best, most premium products . We all have been in a situation before when we need to opt for a less-than-premium product to save a few bucks. Splurging on your vehicle from the beginning will prevent issues down the road.

Did you know that feral animals and rodents can do a lot of damage to engines? The worst damage they can do is chew the electrical wiring system, but they can chew on other things as well, such as cabin filters, air filters, and the under-hood insulation, to name a few. They hit hardest in winter when the cold hits them the hardest but will try and make a nest any time during the year. Climbing into a just-used warm car chassis must be inviting for cold critters.

A vehicle left unused is a great place for a rodent to find a way to make a home. In this case the vehicle is just a safe, dry place to make a home.

The offenders we see the most in Cape Coral are field mice. These murid rodents can seriously cripple an engine if left unchecked. People turn to many different methods in the hope of deterring pests from nibbling at their cars. There are sprays available, as well as ultrasonics. These can help but don’t guarantee to work.

We've made it through another year. Pandemic, a threatening recession, and political turmoil may have bloodied our noses and given us a lot to be thankful for at the end of the year, but it hasn't broken America yet. We're still going, and we're going strong.

Think back to 2020; all of the bitterness, unhappiness, and unrest that we were seeing. The pandemic forced us indoors and made the time go by so slowly, as we waited for the chance to be with our friends again; or just experience something as innocent as a movie theater on the night of an exciting premiere.

This Holiday season is different -- and it even feels different than it has in many years. People are beginning to see how selfishness and misplaced anger allowed us to forget our better natures. To forget the kindness this season inspires and the hope it grants us as the year dies and is reborn with a new opportunity; for us to show the best things that live in our hearts.

When your New Year's resolutions come around, maybe this would be a good year to look at what we have gained and lost in the last year -- the hurdles we've overcome, the tests we've failed, and what they both taught us. Instead of proclaiming sweeping change, maybe this is the year that we take a close look at the message of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol."

There's a Broadway version of the Charles Dickens classic tale playing at the Fort Myers Theater from December 10th to the 19th. And I think that's a symptom of how the story manages to reach so many without touching their lives. Without believing in the miracle of divine intervention and the threat of an early grave, people fail to see the transformation that takes place. They fail to see the way his heart opened again to see his sister and the one great love of his life again, and how he failed to be the kind of man to his employee that his sister, his love, and his former boss had been to him.

The story of Ebenezer Scrooge isn't about a rich man giving away all his money. In almost every version of the story, Ebenezer stays a very wealthy man. Ebenezer doesn't hate himself for the things he acquires or the money he collects. But he becomes much kinder with it and has empathy for those in need again.

Perhaps this year, we should stop to consider the kind of neighbor, friend, and relative we are. Fear has been such a huge part of our lives for the last two years. Maybe, we are in a place where we can remember before heartbreaks and upsets to become the best versions of ourselves and remember to carry Christmas all year round in our hearts again. Maybe it won't last, but it's worth a shot.

The Color of Your Anti-Freeze Does Matter

Not all antifreeze is created equal -- you may have noticed that antifreeze (also known as coolant) comes in different colors. There are pink, orange, blue, and green engine coolants out there, and they all differ. All these colors make it complicated for car owners -- which coolant works best for my vehicle?

Green antifreeze may be the most common option, but it does not mean it is the best option for your vehicle. Green antifreeze is commonly used in cars produced domestically between 1920 and 1990. For example, if you own a GM, Ford, or Dodge produced between the 20s and the 90s, you will most likely find a green coolant in your engine. This type of coolant contains silicates and phosphate corrosion inhibitors to protect several metal parts in your engine, including your radiator and engine.

Newer vehicles have OAT antifreeze, which ranges from orange, red, blue, and dark green. This type of coolant does not have silicates or phosphates, but it does contain corrosion inhibitors, which are designed to ensure the coolant lasts longer than usual. Special ingredients are used to prevent rust and corrosion. OAT antifreeze is typically used in GM, Volkswagen, Honda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota newer models.

HOAT antifreeze is a mix between IAT and OAT coolants and specifically designed for newer cars. This coolant contains added silicates for increased aluminium protection and corrosion. HOAT coolant is usually yellow or orange. Typically, your vehicle is born with a specific coolant color, and it is recommended you don’t change it. There are different colors and blends for makes, models, and years of vehicles.

It’s Love Bug Season! How To Prepare Your Vehicle

Even though our lives may be a little different than how we expected them to be this month, Mother Nature is still in operation, and we are beginning to see those pesky love bugs out and about! Some of us may think these love bugs are quite cute and adorable, but they can wreak absolute havoc on our cars. Lovebugs are starting to make their Spring appearance, but there are steps we can take to make sure these highly-acidic bugs don’t show our cars too much of their love.
Here is how to combat the influx of love bugs:

For best results, wash them completely off your vehicle’s surface as soon as possible, as their acidity can quickly erode your car’s paint within days. Try not to use your windshield wipers and washer fluid to eradicate those love bugs. You will find yourself with a flurry of bug parts!
There are many commercial cleaners out there that can adequately clean your vehicle and wash away those love bugs. Super Clean, Simple Green, and Spray ‘n Wash are exceptionally capable.
A dryer sheet also works magic on making sure those love bugs remain a distant memory. Try wetting a dryer sheet, letting it soak for a few minutes, and then get to cleaning. Dryer sheets don’t scratch and will pull the bugs off easily.
Hot water is also an effective weapon against these love bugs. Using a sponge or cleaning rag, soak the area afflicted with love bugs. The hot water will effectively loosen any love bugs intent on sticking to your car.

Another trick is to put baby oil and water in a bowl right outside your door. This secret recipe will attract the love bugs and keep them away from your vehicle!

It all started at Target, when one of the owners of Premier Auto Service Center, Jocelyne Dauphinais, noticed that a poster about giving 5% of your purchase price to the school of your choice. This idea resonated with Jocelyne, especially when she saw that every school year, each of her children’s teachers would have for a list of items, hoping that the parents would help them.

Instead of volunteering, Jocelyne decided to ask the PTO, the principal, the teachers, and even the coaches to figure out the best way they could help the school and teachers. The team at Premier Auto Service Center strongly believes that if we help our teachers, we help everyone’s future. With that in mind, we decided the best way to help the schools would be to give the schools 5% of the sales of anyone who tells us they are from a school, whether they are parent, student, teacher, or grandparent. The proceeds are directly from our shop’s profits.

Jocelyne and the rest of the team at Premier Auto Service Center didn’t stop there… Because she still knew teachers at the school, she would sometimes occasionally send an extra check along with a quarterly one. This way, we could help out with a specific event, such as a fall festival, rally, fundraiser, or scholarship, or anything else.

As of January 1, 2018, Premier Auto Service Center has given a little over $18,000.00 to the following schools:

We Celebrate Veterans Day

Veteran’s Day is a day to set aside and honor all American veterans, both living and dead. On November 11, 2019, we will recognize the sacrifices that veterans made when keeping our country free. Many confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. Memorial Day honors the fallen, while Veterans Day honors both the fallen and the living.

We are fortunate to live in a country that holds time-honored values of bravery, liberty, and independence. We want to use our November blog to honor and appreciate our Veterans. We recognize the sacrifices you made to ensure we can continue to live freely in our country. We don’t want to think about where we would be without you. Snowbirds Return in October

How Extreme Heat Can Kill Your Car Battery
